This study uses a non-invasive brain stimulation technique to explore how brain rhythms affect memory. You will attend sessions where you perform memory tasks while your brain activity is recorded via EEG. The goal is to understand and potentially improve memory functions.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years of age or older.
  • You are fluent in English.
  • You have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (with glasses or contacts).
  • You are willing to have your photo taken.
  • You have no history of head injury with loss of consciousness (e.g., from a fall or accident).
  • You have no uncorrected vision problems or physical disabilities that would prevent you from seeing brief images on a computer screen or clicking a mouse quickly.
  • You have no history of epilepsy, seizures, or fainting spells (except febrile seizures in childhood).
  • If female, you are not pregnant and do not think you might be pregnant.
  • You have no skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, or open wounds on your scalp.
  • You have not had brain surgery in the past.
  • You have no metal in your head or neck (except dental work like braces or permanent retainers).
  • You have no implanted electronic devices (e.g., cochlear implants, aneurysm clips, cardiac pacemaker).
  • You do not have a current alcohol or substance use disorder, and you can avoid alcohol and non-prescribed drugs for 24 hours before each session.
  • You have not consumed alcohol on the day of the session, and you have not had more than 2 drinks in the 24 hours before the session.
  • You are not sick with a fever, sleep-deprived, dizzy, unwell, or intoxicated at the time of the session.
  • You have eaten and had fluids before the session, but you have not consumed more caffeine than you normally do.
  • You are not taking (and have not taken) anti-seizure medications (anticonvulsants) in your lifetime.
  • You are not taking and have not taken benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam, alprazolam) in the past 3 months.
  • You have not recently started, stopped, or changed the dose of any psychiatric medications (e.g., antidepressants, antipsychotics) in the past 3 months.
  • You are not currently taking bupropion, tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics, or tramadol, and have not taken them in the past 3 months.
  • You have no history of heart problems, including arrhythmias (e.g., atrial fibrillation), and are not taking heart medications.
  • You do not have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, or psychotic disorder.
