Thyroid autoimmunity and eye changes in Graves disease

This study looks at how inflammation and thyroid autoimmunity in Graves disease may cause changes in the retina at the back of the eye. It uses a special eye scan (OCT) to measure those changes and compares results between people with Graves disease and healthy volunteers.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have been diagnosed with Graves disease, or you are a healthy person with no known thyroid condition
  • You can have an eye scan (OCT) and blood tests within 10 days of each other
  • You do not have certain eye diseases like glaucoma, retinal problems, or severe nearsightedness
  • You have not had eye surgery in the past
  • You do not have an active infection, cancer, or a condition that causes whole-body inflammation

Atorvastatin for moderate-to-severe thyroid eye disease

This study tests whether the cholesterol-lowering drug atorvastatin can help people with active, moderate-to-severe thyroid eye disease (swelling and bulging of the eyes caused by an overactive thyroid). You will receive the drug or a placebo alongside your usual steroid treatment, and your eyes will be checked over about a year.
