Who can take part

  • You have stage 3, 4, or 5 chronic kidney disease (not on dialysis).
  • Your recent red blood cell counts (hemoglobin) are low but above certain minimums depending on whether you've had prior anemia treatment.
  • You have not had a stroke, heart attack, or blood clot in the last 6 months.
  • Your liver and heart function are reasonably healthy, and your blood pressure is under control.
  • You have not taken other experimental anemia drugs or had certain stomach surgeries.
