Electric Stimulation to Help Swallowing After Breathing Tube

Who can take part

  • Currently hospitalized in an intensive care unit, rehabilitation ward, or weaning facility
  • Have a tracheostomy (a breathing tube in your windpipe) that has been in place for at least 72 hours because of difficulty coming off mechanical ventilation
  • Have been diagnosed with swallowing difficulties, confirmed by a swallowing test
  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Do not have a history of swallowing problems before this hospitalization
  • Are not pregnant and do not have a spinal cord injury, head/neck cancer, or medical contraindications to neck electrical stimulation
