Who can take part
- Diagnosed with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma that is locally advanced and cannot be surgically removed (stages II–IVa, or stage IVb if only affecting neck lymph nodes)
- Age 18–74 years old at enrollment
- No prior chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, or other cancer treatments
- Good overall health and functional status (able to care for yourself with minimal assistance)
- Adequate blood cell counts, kidney and liver function based on recent blood tests
- Life expectancy of at least 6 months
