Who can take part

  • Sciatica (leg pain from nerve compression) lasting longer than 1 month that interferes with daily activities
  • Imaging (MRI or CT) showing possible nerve root compression at L4-L5 or L5-S1 levels, but doctors aren't completely certain which nerve is causing your pain
  • You have decided to have single-level lumbar decompression surgery (a procedure to relieve pressure on one nerve in the lower back)
  • You do not have severe weakness or numbness as your main symptom—pain is primary
  • You are not pregnant, do not have active cancer, and are able to follow assessment instructions
  • Only one nerve root is compressed at one spinal level (not multiple levels)
