Who can take part
- Be between 12 and 18 years old
- Have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and currently be in a depressed episode
- Score at least 40 on the Child Depression Rating Scale (a measure of depression severity)
- Not have other serious mental health conditions (except anxiety, which is okay)
- Not have tried and failed two or more different antidepressants, or previously not tolerated sertraline
- Not be at high risk for suicide, and not have recently used antibiotics, antifungals, or probiotics
