Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old and scheduled for planned (elective) heart surgery that requires a heart-lung machine
  • Your kidneys are working reasonably well (eGFR score of 60 or higher)
  • You do not have a history of serious kidney problems, kidney transplant, or current kidney dialysis
  • You do not have skin problems, infections, or device allergies that would prevent wearing the ear stimulation device
  • You do not have certain heart rhythm problems, a pacemaker, or implanted defibrillator
  • You are able to understand the study and provide informed consent, or have a legal representative who can do so
