Who can take part

  • Aged 18 to 84 years old
  • Having noncardiac surgery that will take 2 hours or more
  • No skin problems or infections on the outer ear
  • Not currently taking certain medications for nerve, stomach, or bladder issues (cholinergic or anticholinergic drugs)
  • No history of schizophrenia, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, or myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakness condition)
  • No heart problems like very low heart rate, certain heart block, a pacemaker, or weak heart pump
  • Able to communicate and cooperate with the study team
  • Not expected to need a breathing tube for more than one day after surgery
