Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You need a breathing tube (mechanical ventilation) and are expected to need it for more than 48 hours
  • You were intubated (had the breathing tube placed) within 24 hours before or 48 hours after admission to the ICU
  • You can provide informed consent or have a legal representative who can
  • You do not have severe immune system problems, including advanced HIV/AIDS or active blood cancers being treated
  • You are not pregnant and are not in an end-of-life care situation
