Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 64 years old
  • You are scheduled for open kidney removal surgery under general anesthesia
  • You are in generally good health (no serious heart, lung, or other medical conditions)
  • You have no allergy to local anesthetic medications (numbing drugs)
  • You have no infection, skin problems, or spine abnormalities where the injection would be placed
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medications that cannot be stopped
