This study compares two different nerve-block techniques to see which works better for pain control after open kidney surgery. One block targets muscles between the ribs, the other targets muscles around the spine. You will be randomly assigned to one of the two groups.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old.
  • Your health status is classified as ASA I or II (generally healthy or mild disease only).
  • You are scheduled for planned (not emergency) open nephrectomy (kidney removal through a cut in your side).
  • You are willing and able to give written permission to join the study.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or less (not severely obese).
  • You are not allergic to local anesthetics (like lidocaine or bupivacaine).
  • You have no infection, bleeding disorder, or blood-thinning medication that would interfere with the block.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
