- Confirmed ulcerative colitis diagnosis at least 12 weeks before enrolling, with both endoscopy pictures and tissue biopsy showing UC
- Moderate to severe active UC confirmed by recent endoscopy with a specific inflammation score
- Previous treatment with standard UC medications that either didn't work well initially, stopped working over time, or caused intolerance (allergic reaction or side effects)
- Inflammation affecting more than the rectum alone and more than 20 cm of the colon
- No history of Crohn's disease or other types of colitis
- No chronic or recurrent infections, and willing to use contraception (or abstain) during the study and for 6 months after the last dose
