Who can take part
- Age 40 or older
- Confirmed squamous cell carcinoma (a type of head and neck cancer) in the mouth, throat, or voice box
- Planned to receive radiation therapy with the goal of curing the cancer, with or without chemotherapy
- Good enough overall health to tolerate treatment (ECOG score 0–2)
- Able to complete questionnaires and follow study visits in Norwegian or English
- Willing to travel to Oslo or Bergen if randomly assigned to proton therapy
