Who can take part
- Age 18–75 years old
- Diagnosis of locally recurrent head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (cancer that returned in the original area) that can be surgically removed
- No prior chemotherapy or immunotherapy for the recurrent disease (though prior treatment for initial advanced cancer is okay if more than 6 months have passed)
- Good overall health with ECOG performance status 0 or 1 (able to carry out daily activities with minimal or no assistance)
- Normal blood counts, liver, kidney, heart, and thyroid function
- No active autoimmune diseases, active infections, uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes, or recent heart problems
