Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with cirrhosis (scarring and damage to the liver)
  • Your doctor has planned a TIPS procedure (a shunt placed inside your liver) specifically to treat refractory ascites (fluid in your belly that doesn't respond to water pills)
  • You are at least moderately malnourished (your body is not getting enough nutrients)
  • You have not taken lactulose or rifaximin medications in the past 4 weeks
  • Your liver, heart, and kidney function are not severely compromised
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or unable to consent to the study
