Who can take part

  • You are having lung surgery that requires removing part of your lung and special breathing support for over 1 hour
  • You are in generally good health (American Society of Anesthesiologists status I–III, which most surgical patients are)
  • You can function independently or with minor limitations (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group status 0–2)
  • You do not have large air pockets (bullae) in your lungs
  • You have not been on a breathing machine before this surgery
  • Your heart rate and blood pressure are stable before surgery, and your surgery does not require heart-lung bypass
