  • You are 18–80 years old
  • You are scheduled for elective (planned, non-emergency) open liver surgery
  • Your heart, lungs, liver, and blood clotting are in reasonably good health (not severely impaired)
  • You do not have a localized skin infection where the needle would be inserted
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to local anesthetics or opioid pain medicines
  • You can provide written informed consent to join the study
