This study compares two ways to create access for dialysis in patients aged 60 or older (or younger with multiple health conditions). You'll either receive a tunneled catheter placed in your chest or neck, or have surgery to create a fistula (direct connection between an artery and vein in your arm) to help with dialysis treatment.

Who can take part

  • Age 60 or older, OR younger than 60 with a score of more than 6 on a health complexity scale
  • Have advanced kidney disease (stage 5) requiring dialysis treatment
  • Be in stable health at the time of enrollment
  • Be able to have either a fistula in your upper arm OR a tunneled catheter
  • Be available for follow-up appointments throughout the study
  • Sign a written consent form agreeing to participate
