Who can take part

  • Age 18–55 years old
  • If female, must be in the mid-luteal phase of your menstrual cycle (roughly days 19–23 of your cycle) when you enroll
  • Either newly diagnosed with one of five psychiatric conditions (bipolar disorder type I or II, panic disorder, depression, OCD, or schizophrenia) and never taken psychiatric medications, OR haven't taken any psychiatric medications for at least 6 months
  • No current use of medications that suppress your immune system, antibiotics, or hormone replacement therapy
  • No active infections or infections resolved less than 3 weeks ago
  • No serious medical conditions like autoimmune diseases, other major illnesses, or untreated psychiatric conditions besides your primary diagnosis
