Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must be of Kyrgyz ethnicity and have been born, raised, and currently live at about 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) elevation
  • You must speak Russian fluently or natively
  • You cannot have serious health conditions like unstable high blood pressure, heart disease, or lung disease
  • You cannot regularly take medications that affect sleep or breathing (like sedatives, painkillers, or altitude sickness pills)
  • You cannot smoke more than 20 cigarettes per day, and you must be able to follow the study instructions
