Who can take part

  • You must have a confirmed blockage in the main vein that brings blood to your liver (portal vein).
  • You must have had at least two episodes of bleeding from swollen veins in your food pipe or stomach.
  • You must be unable to have the usual treatments (like TIPS) because of blood clots in your liver, prior spleen removal, or a failed attempt.
  • Your liver function must be good enough (Child-Pugh score 12 or less) to safely handle the procedure.
  • You must not have a complete blockage in the vein that drains blood from your intestines (superior mesenteric vein).

Portal vein stent for narrowed portal blood vessels

This trial looks at whether placing a small metal stent in the portal vein and nearby veins can improve problems caused by major narrowing (or clotting) of these vessels in people with gastrointestinal cancers. If you have significant vessel narrowing, the study may offer a targeted way to relieve pressure and symptoms that are not caused by the tumor directly.
