Who can take part

  • You must be between 18 and 65 years old.
  • You must be scheduled for a lobectomy (removal of a lung lobe) using keyhole surgery (thoracoscopic/VATS).
  • Your surgery is expected to last more than one hour with one lung collapsed.
  • You must not have had any prior lung surgery.
  • You must not have significant collapse (atelectasis) on a CT scan before surgery.
  • You must not have certain conditions that make breathing support unsafe (e.g., head injury, heart failure, or a collapsed lung).
  • You must not need oxygen therapy at home or have moderate to severe COPD.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) must be less than 30.
  • You must not have had a heart attack, stroke, or have stents in your heart or brain.
