Nose tubes for breathing help in preterm babies

This study compares two ways of giving breathing support through the nose to preterm babies who are having trouble breathing. One method uses a small tube placed in both nostrils (nasal cannula), and the other uses a single tube in one nostril (single nasal prong). The goal is to see which works better and is more comfortable for the baby.

Who can take part

  • Your baby was born between 28 and 37 weeks of pregnancy (preterm)
  • Your baby has trouble breathing and needs help from a machine that gives air through a small tube in the nose
  • You (parent or guardian) agree in writing to let your baby participate
  • Your baby does not have a defect of the nose (like cleft lip or palate)
  • Your baby does not have other serious birth defects that would make this breathing help unsafe
  • Your baby did not need a breathing tube put into the windpipe immediately at birth
