Heart ultrasound check for older adults

This study tests whether using a small handheld ultrasound device during regular clinic visits can help find heart valve problems or heart muscle weakness early in people aged 65 to 85. If the ultrasound shows a possible issue, you'll get a follow-up confirmatory heart ultrasound (echocardiogram) to be sure.

Who can take part

  • You are between 65 and 85 years old.
  • You have a scheduled appointment at a participating primary care or geriatrics clinic.
  • You have NOT had an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) in the last 5 years.
  • You have no known heart valve disease (like aortic or mitral valve problems) or weak heart pumping (ejection fraction of 50% or less).
  • You have not had surgery or a procedure to replace or repair heart valves.
  • You are willing and able to give written consent and, if an abnormal finding is seen, return for a confirming echocardiogram.
