Who can take part

  • You must be between 18 and 60 years old.
  • You must have sudden liver failure that was NOT caused by taking too much acetaminophen (like Tylenol).
  • The cause of your liver failure should be from viral hepatitis (A, B, or E), a drug (other than acetaminophen), or an unknown cause.
  • You must NOT have already received N-acetylcysteine (NAC) for this episode of liver failure.
  • You cannot have a history of chronic liver disease or cirrhosis, or have had a liver transplant.
  • You cannot be pregnant, and you must not have severe heart, kidney, brain, or infectious diseases, or be allergic to NAC.
