Who can take part

  • You are 65 years of age or older.
  • You are scheduled for a planned (not emergency) heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass).
  • You are able to complete a short memory and thinking test before surgery.
  • You do not have a current or past brain or mental health condition that could affect confusion checks (like dementia or a recent stroke).
  • You do not have severe liver or kidney problems, and you are not allergic to dezocine.
