Who can take part

  • You are 65 years old or older.
  • You are scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) abdominal surgery.
  • You have no serious memory or thinking problems, and you have not been diagnosed with a mental illness or a neurological condition.
  • You are not taking any medications for the brain or nerves, such as those for seizures, Parkinson's, depression, or psychosis.
  • You do not have severe kidney or liver disease.
  • You are not allergic to lidocaine or dexmedetomidine, and you do not have a very slow heart rate or certain heart block conditions.
