Laser therapy vs hand exercises for fistula maturation in dialysis patients

Who can take part

  • You must be between 35 and 50 years old.
  • You must have chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 4 or 5.
  • You must have a newly created radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula (RC-AVF) in your non-dominant arm.
  • The cephalic vein in your non-dominant forearm must be at least 2.5 mm in diameter.
  • You must not have had prior vascular access surgery on the same arm.
  • You must not have a physical or mental disability that prevents you from doing hand exercises.
  • You must have a normal Allen's test (good blood flow to the hand).
  • Your cephalic vein must not be absent or thrombosed (blocked).
  • You must not be currently participating in regular exercise training (like an athlete or manual laborer).
  • You must not have hemophilia or other bleeding disorders.
  • You must not have a personal or family history of cancer.
  • You must not have severe heart disease (ejection fraction 20% or less).
  • You must not have known central venous stenosis on the side of the fistula.
