- You are scheduled for heart surgery (bypass and/or valve surgery) through a cut in the chest
- You are independent in daily activities like bathing, dressing, and moving around
- Your surgery is not an emergency
- You do not have a life-threatening illness, memory problems like dementia, severe liver disease, or need dialysis
