Who can take part
- You have stomach (or the junction of the esophagus and stomach) cancer that is proven as signet ring type on biopsy
- Your cancer stage is IB, II, or III, and doctors think it can be removed with curative intent
- There is no spread to distant organs and no cancer coating on the belly (peritoneal carcinomatosis) seen on a look-in-the-abdomen procedure before treatment
- You can do daily activities with limited help (performance status 2 or less) and you are age 18–80
- Your blood and organ tests are good enough for treatment (kidney, liver/bilirubin, blood counts, albumin, clotting)
- You have not had chemotherapy or radiation for stomach cancer before, and you are not pregnant or breastfeeding
