Xenon MRI scan for people with chronic lung disease

This study tests whether a special MRI scan using xenon gas can be done safely and provide useful information in people with chronic lung conditions. You may be able to take part if your breathing tests and oxygen levels are adequate and you can complete the MRI safely.

Who can take part

  • Be age 18 to 85 and have a diagnosed chronic lung condition (such as asthma, COPD, emphysema, bronchiectasis, sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis, alpha-1 deficiency, or LAM)
  • Understand the study and agree by signing informed consent
  • Be able to hold your breath for about 16 seconds during testing
  • Have breathing test results that meet study thresholds (FEV1 over 25% of predicted, and FVC over 25% of predicted and over 0.5 liter)
  • Be able to do breathing tests like spirometry/plethysmography and follow instructions consistently
  • Be able to safely undergo MRI (no unsafe metal/implants and able to tolerate being in the scanner)
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
