Who can take part

  • Your child is scheduled for planned (elective) heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass).
  • A parent/guardian can give written consent for the study.
  • The surgery is not an emergency.
  • Your child does not have a serious abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia).
  • Your child is not too unstable right now (no high blood-pressure support medicine such as norepinephrine above 1 mcg/kg/min).
  • Your child is not currently in another research study and does not have certain conditions like cancer (neoplasia) or prior heart transplant.
