Who can take part
- Be an adult (18 or older) in the intensive care unit and currently on a breathing machine
- Be able to go through a standard “weaning trial,” which tests whether you can breathe without full machine support
- Have a normal heart rhythm (sinus rhythm)
- Not be pregnant
- Your medical team must not think you have a nerve or muscle disease that affects breathing (neuro-myopathy)
- You should not already have a tracheotomy, and the ultrasound should be possible: there must be enough image quality to see at least a four-chamber view of the heart on ultrasound
