Who can take part

  • You have been on a breathing machine for at least 24 hours and are ready for a trial of breathing on your own.
  • You are calm and alert enough (sedation score between -1 and +1 on a scale called RASS).
  • You are at high risk for needing the breathing tube again because you have a heart condition (such as a weak heart, blocked arteries, irregular heartbeat, or history of fluid in the lungs) or a lung condition (such as COPD, emphysema, asthma, or obesity-related breathing problems).
  • You do not have a muscle or nerve disease like myasthenia gravis that started before this hospital stay.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are not under legal guardianship or court protection.
