Who can take part

  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) in the intensive care unit
  • Your doctor plans to try taking you off the breathing machine (weaning)
  • You are stable enough to have an ultrasound of your heart (echocardiogram)
  • You do not have a severe heart valve problem or a heart defect you were born with
  • You do not have a lot of fluid around your heart or a blood clot in your lungs
