This trial tests whether a newer antibiotic (ceftolozane/tazobactam) works as well as the standard drug (meropenem) for treating fever and low white blood cell counts in people who carry or are at risk for a certain type of resistant bacteria (ESBL). If you are colonized with ESBL or have recently used certain antibiotics, you may be eligible.

Who can take part

  • You have a fever and a low white blood cell count (febrile neutropenia).
  • You are either colonized with a resistant bacteria called ESBL, or you've taken certain strong antibiotics (like cephalosporins or piperacillin/tazobactam) for at least 2 days in the last month.
  • You have not been found to carry bacteria that are resistant to the study drugs (carbapenems or ceftolozane/tazobactam).
  • You have not used carbapenem antibiotics (like meropenem) for at least 2 days in the last month.
