Drug to activate a sleep-control pathway for sleep apnea

This early study tests a medicine that is meant to improve how your brain and breathing muscles work during sleep for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If you qualify, you would be monitored during sleep to see whether the treatment changes breathing events and oxygen levels.

Who can take part

  • You have sleep apnea with more than 10 breathing events per hour while lying on your back during NREM sleep
  • You do not have other major medical conditions besides well-controlled high blood pressure or mild diabetes
  • You are not taking medicines that affect breathing, sleep/arousal, or muscle function
  • You should be able to sleep lying on your back (supine) during the sleep study
  • You are not allergic to any study medications

This study tests acetazolamide (a medicine that changes breathing chemistry) to see how it affects sleep quality and neurocognitive (brain/memory/attention) outcomes in adults with untreated moderate to severe sleep apnea.
