Who can take part
- You are scheduled for your first, planned (not emergency) open-heart surgery (like CABG or valve repair/replacement, or combined procedures).
- Before surgery, your heart rhythm is normal sinus rhythm (your heart is in a regular rhythm).
- You do not have a known history of atrial fibrillation (and no known episodes of related fast/irregular rhythms lasting more than 30 seconds).
- You have not had a previous heart surgery that used a heart-lung bypass machine (cardiopulmonary bypass).
- You have never been treated with amiodarone for an abnormal fast rhythm coming from the upper heart chambers.
- You are not going to need a surgery specifically to treat rhythm problems in the atria (like pulmonary vein isolation or a Maze procedure).
