This early-phase trial tests a biologic medicine (anakinra) given after an ACL injury to try to prevent or reduce later osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis). It enrolls young adults who recently tore their ACL and are planning a specific type of ACL reconstruction.

Who can take part

  • You’re 18 to 35 years old, and your growth plates have already closed
  • Your ACL tear was confirmed by MRI within 2 weeks of when you first got evaluated
  • You plan to have ACL surgery using your own kneecap tendon (bone-patellar tendon-bone graft) within 45 days of the injury
  • Your knee does not involve certain other ligament injuries (no posterior cruciate ligament injury; MCL is at most mild, and no posterolateral corner injury)
  • You have not had prior surgery or a prior injury in that same knee
  • You do not have infection, anakinra allergy, recent cortisone shots, bleeding/clotting disorders or blood thinners, cancer, autoimmune/inflammatory disease, weak immunity, or significant kidney failure
