Who can take part

  • Be age 1 to 21 years old
  • Have chronic kidney disease with a measured kidney function estimate (GFR) under 90
  • At your last clinic visit, hemoglobin (Hb) was at least 9.0 but still below the age/sex cutoffs listed
  • At the last tests, have iron levels that match the study’s low/normal range: transferrin saturation 20% or less and ferritin 100 ng/mL or less
  • Not be on iron supplements or medicines that help red blood cell production (like erythropoietin) within the last 3 months
  • Not be on hemodialysis, not have had a blood transfusion in the last 4 months, and not be expecting dialysis/transplant soon
