Deep brain stimulation for hard-to-treat low back pain

Who can take part

  • Be 40 to 75 years old and have had severe low back pain for more than 2 years.
  • Your average back pain is still very high (more than 8 out of 10).
  • You’ve already tried multiple treatments—such as spinal cord stimulation, physical therapy, pain procedures, opioids, and at least one other pain medicine—and they did not give at least 50% relief.
  • Two neurosurgeons agree your pain does not have a “surgical fix” cause.
  • You must be able to have follow-up visits for about 1.5 years, including adjusting the device, and be willing to report new neurological or mental health symptoms.
