Who can take part

  • You must be a premenopausal woman
  • You must be taking a combined estrogen/progestin birth control (pill, patch, or ring)
  • Your weight should have been stable for the last 6 months (not changing more than 5%)
  • You should meet “metabolic syndrome,” meaning central fat plus blood pressure and/or blood test changes
  • You must have at least three of these: large waist, high triglycerides, low HDL (“good cholesterol”), elevated blood pressure, or elevated fasting glucose/2-hour sugar test
