Who can take part

  • You had a stroke in the middle part of the brain (middle cerebral artery area) seen on an MRI within 48 hours of hospital admission
  • You are between 18 and 85 years old
  • Your main problem is arm/leg weakness on one side (hemiparesis) without major speech problems, vision problems, or ignoring one side
  • Your MRI and exam must fit specific score ranges on a stroke severity checklist (NIH Stroke Scale)
  • You do not have a long-term disability or prior weakness that existed before this stroke
  • You can safely have repeat MRI scans and movement testing (no medical issues that make MRI unsafe, and no pain or swelling that blocks testing)
