Exercise program to reduce tiredness in some kidney patients

This trial studies whether doing a combination exercise program can reduce “fatigability,” meaning feeling unusually tired or weak during activity, in Veterans with moderate-to-advanced chronic kidney disease. It also compares results with people without kidney disease and checks for safety, especially for heart and joint health.

Who can take part

  • You’re 50 years or older and can walk on your own (with or without a cane/walker).
  • You have chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 3 or 4 and are not on dialysis (predialysis).
  • You can speak and read English, and can understand where you are and what time it is (person/place/time).
  • You do not have serious/untreated heart problems, severe uncontrolled cardiovascular issues, or recent acute kidney injury (in the last 12 months).
  • You use the DC VAMC as your main place for kidney care.
  • You don’t have orthopedic/joint pain or mobility problems that would make exercise unsafe, and you plan to stay in the DC area for the next year.
