Who can take part

  • You have severe sleep apnea (AHI greater than 30) or belong to the control group with mild sleep apnea (AHI under 5)
  • If you are in the control group, your daytime sleepiness score (Epworth) must be greater than 10
  • You must not have very high daytime sleepiness (Epworth 18 or higher)
  • Your body mass index (BMI) must be 40 or higher
  • You should not have certain heart or blood vessel conditions (like high blood pressure, diabetes, prior stroke, or heart disease)
  • You should not be using CPAP yet, and you should not take certain medicines (blood pressure meds, statins, diabetes medicines, beta-blockers, or steroid pills)
