Intermittent low-oxygen therapy for sleep apnea and health risks

Who can take part

  • You’re age 30 to 60 and your body size fits study limits (BMI under 40).
  • You have sleep apnea that’s mainly obstructive or a mix, with testing showing AHI 100 or less and oxygen drops not too severe (average desaturation 85% or higher).
  • You were recently diagnosed and have NOT used CPAP before.
  • You also have high blood pressure that’s either untreated or not well-controlled with just one blood pressure medicine, and your starting BP cannot be higher than 160/110.
  • Your blood tests match the study needs (pre-diabetes and cholesterol in the 200–239 range) and you have normal lung tests and an EKG.
  • You can’t be pregnant, can’t be a night-shift worker, and should avoid recent long-distance travel across time zones; also avoid sleep-promoting supplements like melatonin.
