Who can take part
- You have a serious infection that may be community- or hospital-acquired
- A doctor has diagnosed septic shock and you need medicines to raise blood pressure plus lactate is above 2 mmol/L after enough IV fluids
- You are on an invasive breathing machine (mechanical ventilation)
- Your body temperature is above 38.3°C, and it is being treated while you are sedated or receiving IV pain medicine
- You are already receiving IV antibiotics and/or treatment to control the infection source
- A family member or designated person can give consent (or consent is obtained as an emergency inclusion)
