Who can take part
- If you’re a patient: you’re age 50–89 and have known carotid artery plaque over 70% that will be treated with surgery
- You either have asymptomatic or symptomatic carotid disease, or have advanced peripheral artery disease
- You can safely lie still on a flat surface for about 60 minutes with your arms down
- You can give informed consent and are not currently in another research study
- No MRI scan safety issues (for example: certain pacemakers, metal clips in the brain, shrapnel, or other MRI-incompatibility)
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding, and (for some people) no type 1 diabetes; also avoid conditions that could raise CCR2 like certain cancers or autoimmune/inflammatory diseases
