This study tests drug treatment strategies to reduce seizures after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). It may help prevent new seizure problems or improve seizure control after certain types of brain injury events.

Who can take part

  • You are age 10 or older and have a traumatic brain injury treated in a neuro/special care unit (NSU).
  • If you had an acute seizure during the hospital stay, you must have started phenytoin or levetiracetam for that seizure.
  • If you did not have an acute seizure, you must be enrolled within 48 hours of arriving to the NSU.
  • You must not have had epilepsy before your brain injury.
  • You must not have been taking seizure medicines before the TBI, and you must not be prescribed a different seizure medicine instead of phenytoin or levetiracetam (for the “acute seizure” group).
  • You must be willing to take the study medicine if it contains gelatin, and you must not have severe lactose intolerance or known allergy to the drug ingredients.
